One of the enduring themes of warfare

from the barbarians vs. the Roman Legions, Mosby’s guerillas vs. the Union Army, or the Viet Cong vs. the U.S.— is that of a guerilla army pitted against a conventional one. On the one side logistics, fire power and numbers. On the other stealth, surprise, and the uncanny ability to disappear at will, Chinese Civil War, set in the years 1946-1949, reproduces just such a conflict, as the Nationalist Army and its warlord allies try to stem the growing power of the People's Liberation Army. Clear one province and the guerillas pop up in the next, redeploy your troops and they'll reappear in the areas you just cleared. Garrison your fortresses, clear the railroads, concentrate your army, bring in the air force, clear out their bases - and still those pesky guerillas keep a-coming - taking losses when they must, taking cities when they can. In vain you cry “stand and fight like men" - you may win the battles, but they may win the war. Whether as the irregular leader committed to defeating a conventionally superior foe, or the conventional commander determined to prevent the triumph of the Reds, Chinese Civil War will demand all of your skill.
