HoldFast Atlantic recreates the ship battles contesting control of the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. The navies of Britain and the United States are challenged to keep sea lanes open for its convoys. German U-Boats prowl these waters and German and Italian battleships and cruisers threaten the sea supply lines of the Allies. The great Axis warships Bismarck, Tirpitz and others contest Britain’s best while the United States fleet adds its might to the fight as the war progresses. As the Axis player can you cut the sea lanes that supply Great Britain and Russia to win the war? Or as the Allied player, can you overcome the U-Boat menace and Axis naval and air forces to control the Atlantic.

Blockversion des AH Spiels War at Sea
Durch die Blöcke bietet Holdfast: Atlantic gegenüber den Countern des (lange vergriffenen) Avalon Hill Spiels War at Sea den Vorteil eines eingebauten Fog of War (FoW).
Außerdem enthält die Worthington-Version ein paar alliierte Schiffe (bzw. Task Forces) mehr.
Französische Schiffe sind bei Worthington leider keine enthalten (die kamen bei AH auch erst über eine Erweiterung hinzu).
Der Spielplan ist (wie beim AH Original) aus festem Karton (Mounted Mapboard), zeigt aber erfreulicherweise 1 Seegebiet mehr an (7 statt 6 - das Mittelmeer besteht hier aus 2 Feldern).
Im Gegensatz zum Original sind die Order of Appearence direkt auf den Spielplan gedruckt (statt auf zwei festeren Blättern), was zu einem etwas größeren Spielplan führt.
Wie beim Original hat das Dritte Reich maximal 7 U-Boote gleichzeitig im Spiel. Ich finde diese Beschränkung schade (theoretisch könnten bis zu 14 U-Boote im Spiel sein), nehme aber an, dass das aus Balancinggründe erfolgt.
Das Spiel dauert wie bisher 8 Runden. Die neue Fassung erlaubt einer Seite, auf maximal 12 Siegpunkte davon zu ziehen (bei AH waren es entweder 10 oder no limit, ich weiß es nicht mehr).
Das Spiel ist ein gutes Einstiegsspiel und macht auch alten AH Veteranen Spaß.
Anmerkung: Wie bei AH (Victory in the Pacific) gibt es auch von Worthington eine Pazifik-Kriegversion (Holdfast: Pacific), die deutlich mehr Schiffe und Seegebiete hat (und somit den Spielspaß noch einmal deutlich erhöht.
