Strike ofthe Heron - The Approach to Stalingrad exploresthesudden and astonishingbreakthroughoperation “Fischreiher” (Heron) bythe German XIV Panzer Korps and othersupportingunits, totheVolga River in August, 1942.

Itsentshockwaves all thewayupto Stalin and his Front commandersastheSovietshadbeenabletopreviouslyrepel German attacks, allowingonly a slow advance.

This rapid breakthrough and arrivalof German unitsalongthebanksofVolga River at Rynok (just northof Stalingrad proper) on August 23rd also cutoffchancesof a general offensive bySovietforces on theGerman’sleft flank tothenorth. This hadbeenpartofSTAVKA'soverall plan but hadtobehastilyabandoned.

The suddennessoftheirsuccessevencaughtthe Germans off guard. Howtokeep and furtherexploittheir break- through? All theunits in the Panzer Korps hadsufferedlossesprior and all weresomewhatunderstrength. Many ofthe AFVs were Panzer II, therestmostly Panzer III, and maybe 30 longbarreled Panzer IV. The corridor was not wide, just a fewmiles and manymileslong....

The Sovietsdidreactquickly and by Aug. 24th werelaunchingcounterthrustsagainstthebaseofthe German corridor (nearthe Don), on boththeGerman'sright and leftflanks. But, like the Germans, theSovietswere also weak. Theirdivisionswerereally at brigadestrength, witharound 4000 men. Their tank corpsaveraged 50 AFVs, but manytimes half ofthesewere light tanks. The Sovieteuphoricattacksmanagedtocutthecorridorbriefly, forcingthe Germans tore-supplythemselvesbyair, but hadturnedinto a dire defensive actionwithin a fewdays.

A secondSoviet "pincher" offensive againstthecorridornearerto Stalingrad was launchedfromKotluban' tothenorth and Orlovkatothesouth in early Sept. Usingthenewlyformed 24th and 66th Armies, plus the 4th, 7th and 16th Tank Corps’, alongwithelementsof 1st Guards, slow gainsweremade but eventuallyfaltered. The Soviets lost 200 tanks. The Germans feltsecureenoughtobeginmajoroperationstoenter and capture Stalingrad.

Designedby Perry Moore, Strike ofthe Heron includesonemapwith 280 counters. Units are at thedivision/brigadelevelfortheSovietswhile German forcesaredepictedfrombattaliontodivision. Each turn is 12 hours and a hex isaroundonemile.

In termsof game play, theSovietplayermust not onlyensuresufficientforcesescapetheintended German encirclement, but thenmaintainconstantpressure on theoverextended Panzer Korps with a seriesofcounterattacksfrombothnorth and southofthecorridor.
