The Ashes Ascendancy Starter Set provides two pre-constructed player decks and two sets of dice, letting players immediately jump into the action! Two players can fight each other head-to-head with these decks, or team up to fight a Dragonborn. This starter set has all the rules and components needed for either mode, plus the first-ever Dragonborn to appear in the game: Scatha Kalani! The cards contained in this box serve as the perfect foundation for your Ashes collection!

About Ashes:

Ashes is a card game which can be played head-to-head against another player, or solo or cooperatively against a game-controlled opponent. Players first select a Phoenixborn, a powerful demigod with magical powers, as well as a deck of cards that represents that Phoenixborn’s arsenal of spells, allies, and magical conjurations. You can use a pre-constructed deck right out of any Ashes box set, or dip into your library of cards to construct your deck!

Players also select a pool of 10 custom dice to act as their source of magic during the game. Each round you roll your dice, then spend those dice during your turn to power your spells and summon friends and magical creatures from your imagination.

If you’re playing against another player, you’ll attempt to outsmart each other, with the game ending when one player’s Phoenixborn has been defeated. If playing solo or cooperatively, player-controlled Phoenixborn will battle against a Dragonborn, an otherworldly foe set on killing the children of the Phoenix. These games play similarly to competitive Ashes, except the Dragonborn is controlled by a simple but challenging system, customizable to your level of expertise.

Ashes has been around for over a decade! This is because it does a lot of things differently than other card battlers, offering a refined and thoughtful experience. For instance:

• First Five: Tired of card games where your initial hand stinks, and you know you’re going to lose before the first turn? In Ashes, players choose their starting five cards, ensuring the best strategy wins, instead of the best lucky draw.
• No Mana Ramping: In some card battlers you can get unlucky and end up with too much mana or too little. In Ashes, you’ll have 10 dice to roll and power your magic every round. Even the luck of rolling can be mitigated in a variety of clever ways, ensuring your spells won’t fizzle and your hand won’t get clogged!
• No Blind Purchase: Every Ashes set tells you what cards are inside, and each one comes with the maximum number that can be added into a deck. There’s no need to chase rares or buy multiples of the same set.
• No Silver Bullets: Ashes isn’t a game where a lucky card draw can deliver a one-two punch that knocks out your opponent in one go. To win, you’ll need to design a clever offense and smartly circumvent your enemy’s defenses.
